Maposa
As it turned out, Maposa was populated by squatters in land held by the Forestry Department – though the trees had long since disappeared due to subsistence farmers clearing the land for charcoal and to farm.
Maposa itself also falls under the jurisdiction of the Luanshya Council. From the time we found out the people were living there illegally, we have worked tirelessly with our core Bridge Committee, a motherboard comprised of leaders from all the branches in this area, other like-minded organisations and the government itself to have the land released to the people – some of which have lived there for nearly 50 years.
As of late 2006, the Department of Tourism and Lands have agreed to release 2/3 of the forest to the people. It has been surveyed and beacons placed. We are told that the Forestry Department is conducting a house to house survey in order to ascertain how much land will be designated to each family.
