Income-generating activities
As income-generating activities to help support ourselves, we are currently seeking donors for start-up capital in the following areas:- constructing a sawmill / with an accompanying door factory [this would enable us to employ those who had successfully completed their carpentry school at our Training Center]
- raising animals (chicken run / piggary / goats, and eventually cattle) / with an accompanying butchery [this would enable us to employ those who had successfully completed their animal husbandry classes at our Training Center, as well as provide a source of meat and poultry to the community where there is none currently]
- growing field crops (maize / sunflowers for oil / possibly jatropha), and garden [this would not only enable us to employ farm labor from the community, but provide cooking oil and a source of fresh vegetables for their better nutrition where there is neither at this time – and the jatropha might possibly provide us income in addition to enabling us to hire local farm labor – to do this with a profitable margin, we would also require a tractor]
- planting a small banana plantation [this would enable us to employ not only farm labor, but also marketers as well from the community, and allow us to make a profit as well]
- constructing a fish pond [this would enable us to employ labor from the community, as well as provide a source of fresh and safe fish for them where there is none currently]
- establishing a children’s play park [this would enable us to provide a safe environment for children, employ workers from the community, and alleviate current social behaviors which lead to the spread of HIV/AIDS]
- open a local restaurant which sells pizza and ice cream [this would need to be done in Luanshya or Ndola, and we believe it would be a profitable venture and we would be able to employ women from female-headed households who have been widowed due to HIV/AIDS]
- open a good Christian bookstore [this would need to be done in Luanshya or Ndola or Kitwe, and we believe it would be a profitable venture as there are many who claim to be Christians and are crying for good books and other materials – currently one must travel to the capital city of Lusaka in order to find anything of this nature]
- open a hardware store [this would provide a very pressing need – currently the people we are working with must travel long distances to obtain needed items and, if it were opened in neighboring Luanshya we would also do those living there a service as there is no such business currently]
Additional Areas
In addition to the above, other areas we believe would be viable are:- A block-making business for construction
- A chain of tailoring shops and laundries
- An internet café
- Outlet shops selling used clothing
- Public phone stands
- Portable mills to grind grain
- Crafts for export
- Market stands
- Butcheries
- Beekeeping for honey
